چکیده

This study examines the link between distributional patterns in the input and infants’ acquisition of non-adjacent dependencies. In two Headturn Preference experiments, Dutch-learning 24-month-olds (but not 17-month-olds) were found to track the remote dependency between the definite article het and the diminutive suffix -je while no such evidence was obtained for the remote dependency between the definite article de and the plural suffix -en. In a follow-up corpus analysis, the distributional statistics in children’s input (i.e. frequency, forward and backward transitional probabilities, and average distance between the two elements) were found to elegantly align with the behavioral data; distributional properties of diminutive and plural dependencies differed substantially, with more advantageous patterns for diminutive than for plural dependencies. Our results thus support the notion that there is a strong link between input distributions and the ease with which children acquire sensitivity to remote dependencies. Potential implications are

Pattern-Induced Covert Category Learning in Songbirds

Language is uniquely human, but its acquisition may involve cognitive capacities shared with other species. During development, language experience alters speech sound (phoneme) categorization. Newborn infants distinguish the phonemes in all languages but by 10 months show adult-like greater sensitivity to native language phonemic contrasts than non-native contrasts. Distributional theories acc...

How Does Lexical Acquisition Begin? A cognitive perspective

Lexical acquisition is a critical stage of language development, during which human infants learn a set of word forms and their association with meanings, starting from little a priori knowledge about words they do not even know whether there are words in their mother tongues. How do the infants infer individual words from the continuous speech stream to which they are exposed? This paper inten...

Connectionist Explorations of Multiple-Cue Integration in Syntax Acquisition

Among the many feats of learning that children showcase in their development, syntactic abilities appear long before many other skills, such as riding bikes, tying shoes, or playing a musical instrument. This is achieved with little or no direct instruction, making it both impressive and even puzzling, because mastering natural language syntax is one of the most difficult learning tasks that hu...

Nature ’ S Distributional - Learning Experiment Infants ’ Input , Infants ’ Perception , and Computational Modeling

Infants begin the acquisition of language-specific phoneme perception before their first birthday. In laboratory settings, infants are able to acquire categories on the basis of distributions of speech sounds. The speech sounds in infant-directed speech are distributed in such a way that computationally modeled distributional-learning mechanisms can acquire phoneme categories categories from th...

Distributional category learning by 12-month-old infants: an investigation into the role of prosody and distributional frames

Distributional information is a potential cue for learning syntactic categories. Recent artificial grammar studies demonstrate sophisticated distributional learning by young infants. Here we investigate the possible mechanisms and representations underlying this ability. Does prosody constrain distributional analysis? What specific distributional relations do learners track? Twelve-month-old in...
